Theresa May Signs Historic Letter That Officially Triggers Brexit From EU

England, (AN24) – British Prime Minister, Theresa May has tonight, Tuesday, March 28, signed a letter to the European Union President, Donald Tusk informing him that the United Kingdom is triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, the formal method of leaving the 28-member bloc.

Daily Mail Uk reports that the letter was due to be conveyed to Brussels by diplomats tonight to be handed to Mr Tusk by Britain’s ambassador to the EU Sir Tim Barrow at lunchtime tomorrow.

The British PM spoke with Mr. Tusk, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and German Chancellor, Angela Merkel ahead of the landmark moment.

According to a spokesman of the No 10, ” In ­separate calls, they agreed that a strong EU was in everyone’s interests and that the UK would remain a close and committed ally.

“They also agreed on the importance of entering into negotiations in a constructive and positive spirit, and of ensuring a smooth and orderly exit process.” The spokesman added.

The development will mark the start of complex and contentious negotiations that put the United Kingdom on course to break its ties with the Brussels club by the end of March 2019.

Theresa May will urge the country to “come together” as she looks to the heal the deep wounds caused by a referendum campaign that left the UK mired in division.

The PM’s top team will gather around the Cabinet table at No 10 on Wednesday morning as she updates them on the content of the letter formally invoking Article 50.

According to the arrangement of event tomorrow (Wednesday) March 29, sometimes after 12.30pm, the premier will inform MPs that Brexit is being triggered and in Brussels, British ambassador to the EU Sir Tim Barrow will deliver the document to European Council president Donald Tusk.

Once it has been accepted, Article 50 has been officially launched.

The Prime Minister will say the public should be “no longer defined by the vote we cast, but by our determination to make a success of the result.

“We are one great union of people and nations with a proud history and a bright future.

“And, now that the decision has been made to leave the EU, it is time to come together”, she will say.

May will pledge to represent ‘every person in the UK’, during talks with Brussels, including diehard Remain voters and 3.2million EU citizens living here.
