The All Progressives Congress in Ondo State said, it has placed the Governor of the State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, under a close watch and monitoring on the whereabouts of the N14.6Billion bailout fund approved by President Muhammadu Buhari to pay outstanding workers’ salaries.
In a statement issued in Akure, over the weekend, the Party’s spokesman, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya said the Party has decided to closely monitor governor Olusegun Mimiko on how effectively and promptly he will disburse the bailout fund, approved to the state by President Muhammadu Buhari, to offset the back-logs of workers’ and pensioners’ salaries and entitlements he owned. But to our dismay, the plea and plight of workers and pensioners, alike does not make sense to Mr. Governor, almost a month after receiving the bailout fund.”
“Firstly, the Governor needs to explain to the people of Ondo State, the rationale behind the delay in payment of workers’ salary arrears, despite the good gesture of Mr. President to ameliorate the workers’ suffering?”
“And secondly, Mr. Governor must clarify the allegations and speculations making round in town on diversion of the bailout fund into a fixed deposit account, while the workers are languishing and subjected to an untold hardship?”
“We appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to wade swiftly into this case and ensure that the bailout fund is not diverted from the main purposes for which it was meant. The State’s Accountant General and Commissioner for finance should be invited to answer questions as to why worker are still being owned salaries and emoluments after the state had received fund meant for that purpose.”.
Omo’ba Adesanya noted that, “the purported worker’s verification exercise embarked on by Governor Mimiko is belated and a deliberate attempt to delay the payment of workers’ salary. It further confirmed the speculation that, the Governor had diverted the bailout fund into a fixed deposit account for personal aggrandizement.”
“The recent workers’ protest In Akure over the Governor’s refusal to pay their four months outstanding salaries and allowances is an indication that Dr. Olusegun Mimiko has a hidden and ulterior motives with the bailout fund. It is sad to note that, Governor Olusegun Mimiko could treat the workers, who contributed immensely to his second term victory in office in this manner. This is an exhibition of high level of insensitivity and a clear departure from his ‘Caring Heart Mantra’ “.
“APC therefore charged the leadership of labour unions in Ondo state, to be more proactive, relentless and honest in pressing home their demand, for the prompt payments of their salaries and other entitlements owned by the state government, which the President had since approved and paid into the state’s coffer, and taken their members’ interest and welfare sacrosanct and as a priority”, the statement reads.
