England, (an24) – Championship side Middlesbrough football club on Saturday gained promotion to the top tier of English football after defeating Brighton at the River Stadium.
Both sides went into today’s game with hopes of promotion, though Boro sat ahead of Brighton on goal difference going into the final game of the season.
David Nugent guided a Gaston Ramirez set-piece back across goal, and the Uruguay international Cristhian Stuani tapped home from close range to put the hosts in the driving seat 19 minutes in.
Meanwhile, Brighton needed a win to stand any chance of automatic promotion, but could not get it as Middlesbrough proved more determined to grab the 3 points.
Dale Stephens rose at the back post to head home an Anthony Knockaert free-kick, but the goal-scorer soon turned villain for the Seagulls.
Stephens went into a challenge with Gaston Ramirez and caught the midfielder high up his leg, leaving referee Mike Dean with no alternative but to reach for the red card.
For failing to defeat Middlesbrough at the River Stadium, this means Brighton will have to settle for a place in the playoffs.
