Abeokuta, (An24) – At least two persons were killed while several others were injured on Thursday, January 26, in gas explosion at a filling station in Adigbe area of Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Thursday.
It was gathered that the explosion also caused an inferno which destroyed over seven makeshift shops, as well as a motorcycles parked nearby.
According to report, a welder was welding a gas tank when the gas escaped and the vapour caught fire from a generator being used in a shop close to the gas plant.
Ogun State Director of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Shakiru Adebakin, who confirmed the incident, said that the fire was caused by a man-made error that could have been averted if the owner of the filling station had adopted simple safety precaution.
The incident claims the life of two attendants, identified as Jaiye and Ibrahim, while about Seven others sustained various degree of injuries.
Mr. Akinwande Aboluwoye, Ogun State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, said two persons died in the inferno, while seven others were injured.
He said, “The corpses of the deceased have been deposited in the mortuary of the State General Hospital, Ijaiye in Abeokuta, while those injured are receiving treatment in the same hospital.” he said.
