Gabon, (AN24) – The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are Champions of Africa for the fifth time after defeating Egypt 2-1.
Arsenal star Mohamed Elneny had put Egypt ahead in the first-half, but goals from Nicolas N’Koulou and Aboubakar sealed their Cameroon’s fifth AFCON title.
Though there was doubt ahead of the fixture as to whether Elneny, who had missed the previous two knockout rounds, would be fit to play in the final.
But he passed a late fitness test and was at the centre of everything Egypt created as they dominated the early stages.
Elneny opened the scoring on the 22 minutes before Nicolas Nkoulou equalised for Cameroon on the 59 minutes, rising highest to power home a header on the hour mark.
However, Cameroonian striker, Vincent Aboubakar scored the winning goal on 88 minutes, netting via a right foot volley.
Meanwhile, underdogs Cameroon had already upset the odds to reach the final and stunned the much-fancied Egyptians with the late dramatic winner from Aboubaker to win the Nations cup after seeing seven of its regulars withdrawing to play for their European clubs.
