While addressing party stalwarts of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, Segun Sowunmi, the party’s youth leader revealed why they lost in the general elections of 2015.
According to him, PDP lost because it stopped connecting to the youths.
He said that the youths drive the narrative of political communication in the 21st century through their dominant presence on social media, stressing that leaving the youths behind in the party structures and activities implies losing space on the new media which, according to him, is potent for debunking falsehood and sending the proper message.
Sowunmi also said that the time was apt for the succession plan of the party to come in place, so that they can now begin to engage their colleagues like the ruling party is currently doing.
He expressed optimism that going by the repertoire of capacity, experience, knowledge, know-how, and wealth at the party’s disposal, Nigeria, under PDP youths will become a more coercive, and bigger nation that accommodate the totality of all Nigerians.
He said: “We are not unmindful of how we lost (the 2015 general election). We lost because we stopped connecting with the youths.
“The youths form the largest base of those who drive the poetry of anything; be it for good or otherwise. And therefore, when you begin to leave the youths behind, you will start losing space on social media, you’ll start losing space on new media, and eventually, whatever lies your opponents are telling; will then begin to resemble the truth. There’s no way you will go through the nooks and crannies of the 36 states and Abuja in Nigeria, over a 16 year period, and come up with a verdict that our party has failed. No, we have not failed.
“Democracy imagines that you will win elections sometimes and it also imagines that you will lose elections. Therefore, losing an election ordinarily should not be seen as a defeat or as a big loss. Otherwise, it is not even democracy.
“What we are asking for going forward; is that you cannot have the same consciousness with which you created the problem, to be the consciousness with which you want to solve the problem.
“Therefore, in simple terms, it is time now for the succession plan of our party to come in place, so that the generation that speaks the language of the 21st century can now begin to engage their colleagues like the other people are doing.
“Hopefully, because we have the repertoire of capacity, experience, knowledge, know-how, wealth of everything that is required from our founding fathers, we are convinced that Nigeria under our watch; under the of the PDP younger people will become a more coercive, and bigger nation that accommodate the totality of all Nigerians.
“We are truly the only Nigerian party that understands how to drive the economy. We are certain that we are the Nigerian party that can make life easy for all Nigerians, we just want to thank you and wish you well on- behalf of the generation Next.
“If it must be, it is up to us. And, we are determined to say it will be.”
