Rivers, (AN24) – The Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, today, Friday, February 17, affirmed Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the authentic National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP).
A three-man panel of justices in a unanimous decision agreed that Mr. Sheriff is the authentic National Chairman of the opposition party.
The opposition party has been engulfed in leadership tussle following the inauguration of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee in May 2016.
Recall that Justice Mohammed Liman of the Federal High Court sitting in Rivers state, had sacked Sheriff as chairman of the PDP, while the Abuja division of the court, presided over by Justice Okon Abang had declared Ahmed Makarfi’s caretaker committee as illegal.
Displeased with the judgment of the lower court, both parties went to the Appellate Court to seek redress.
Makarfi led committee challenged the decision of Abang at the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja, but the Appellate Court could not rule on the matter because Sheriff had already filed a suit challenging his removal by a high court in Rivers.
However, the crisis rocking the PDP came to an end today after a three-man panel of justices in a unanimous decision agreed that Mr. Sheriff is the authentic National Chairman of the opposition party.
