By Philips Sunday
England, (AN24) – England representative, Manchester City proved how strong they are as they came from behind to win an eight-goal thriller against Ligue 1side, Monaco at the Etihad Stadium, in their Champions League round-of-16 first leg on Tuesday night.
Midfielder, Raheem Sterling opened scoring for the Citizens, converting Leroy Sane’s low cross, before Monaco striker, Radamel Falcao made it 1-1 with a diving header.
Surprisingly, Kylian Mbappe’s goal and another strike from Falcao appeared to set Monaco on their way to a 3-2 victory after the hour-mark, before City striker, Sergio Aguero scored twice and a goal each from John Stones and Leroy Sane turned the game on its head.
Meanwhile, with eight strikes combined, the teams set a record for the most total goals in a Champions League knockout round first leg.
Manchester City 5-3 Monaco is the highest scoring first leg ever in a Champions League knockout tie.
The teams will be back at it in an encore performance on March 15 at the Stade Louis II in Monaco.
In a similar vein, Atletico Madrid defeated Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 in Germany.
Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann put Atletico two goals up, before Karim Bellarabi pulled one back for the hosts early in the second half.
However, Kevin Gameiro restored Atletico’s two-goal edge from the penalty spot, before Stefan Savic own goal reduced Leverkusen’s deficit ending the score line 4-2 in favour of the Spanish team .
