Ahmad Ahmad Emerges New CAF President

By Ganiyat Ganiyu
Ethiopia, (An24) – Madagascan Ahmad Ahmad has emerged as new Confederation of African Football, CAF, President after amassing 34 votes to 20.
He defeated Issa Hayatou who served for 29 years to emerge as the new CAF president.
Hayatou has been the President of CAF since being appointed back in 1988, and despite several controversies throughout his career he has been able until now to withstand any opposition that came against him.
“When you try to do something, you mean that you can do it,” Ahmad told reporters after the vote. “If I can’t do it, I never stand.”
Ahmad’s victory comes as a shock to many who had expected long-serving President, Hayatou, to keep control of his position.
Zimbabwe football officials lift Ahmad Ahmad in the air as they congratulate him for defeating Issa Hayatou.
Ahmad had a discreet playing and coaching career before he took the reins of the Madagascar football federation in 2003.
