NIJ Students’ Week: More Than Just An Event!

Come May 8-13th, all roads will lead to the premiere Monothecnic of Journalism, the prestigious Nigerian Institute of Journalism, Ogba, as the annual Students’ Week come alive with students from far and near, converging at the school premises to witness another week of thrilling and engaging activities.
The theme of this year’s event, ‘Beyond Ordinary,’ has been carefully chosen to pass a silent message across board that the event will no doubt be more than just a school activity, but more of an industry week, with seasoned professionals, captains of industries as well as A-list artistes on ground – to add glamour to the event.
In times past, the annual programme has been used as a perfect escape by the students from the exertions of academic activities, but this year’s event will be used to bridge the divide between academic and fun-fare – a situation where students can tap from the timeless knowledge of veterans in the industry while basking in the euphoria of a carnival-like atmosphere.
As part of the activities for the week-long affair, the event will kick off on the 8th of Maywith an Opening ceremony followed immediately by ‘Cultural Day’ where students will display the richness and splendor of the various ethnic groups they belong to. Different cultural troupes will also be on ground to entertain guests with their scintillating dance performance and drama. The Monday will end with a grand concert in the evening featuring A-list artistes presently making waves in the entertainment industry
On Tuesday, 9th May will be an ‘interactive Breakfast Session with Celebs’ to be anchored by Cute Kimani. The day will also play host to the Chairman, Editorial Board of The Nation newspaper, Sam Omatseye, as he speaks on “Media in the 21st Century’. Listening to a man who has paid his dues in the industry will be a once in a lifetime experience for students. After the lecture, sporting activities will follow with Track and Field, Indoor Games and Football matches. The curtain will be drawn on Tuesday with a live band performance.
Wednesday May 10th, dubbed “NIJ Got Talent” will provide the avenue for students with special talents in writing, photography, dancing, singing, scripting and poetry to exhibit these talents and walk away with cash prizes. The evening will also feature a mini jamboree with DJ YFM all the way from Washington DC to delight the students to mind blowing mix.
On Thursday, May 11th, Denrenle Edun, Iyabo Ojo, amongst others will be part of the judges as the students welcome another Mr. and Miss NIJ. Every year, students look forward with bated breath on who becomes the face of the institute and in times past, the school has witnessed sublime beauties and sophisticated guys emerge winners of the pageantry. This year will be no exception. We urge you to sit back and look forward to another eventful day as beauty will this time, meet brains.
As part of our culture of giving back to the society, on Friday 12th, we will be donating cash and material items to orphanage homes. The evening would feature ‘An evening with Editors and On-Air-personalities.’ This event will create an enabling environment where the students will socialize and interact with media personalities, who have become their idols and role models.
Saturday May 13th, will usher in the grand finale the crowning effort for the week-long event. On this night, outstanding students from the institute, captains of industries, as well as people who have distinguished themselves from different walks of life will be honoured with the ‘NIJ Students’ Stellar Award for Excellence’.
The Chairman of the event, Emmanuel T. Edward, assures all students to expect nothing short of the extraordinary at this year’s event, while seeking collaboration from the outside community to partner with the Students Body of the institute, as the occasion will be an avenue for corporate bodies and organizations to exhibit their products and services during the week-long event.
