The Lagos State Government has called on officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), other agencies against illegal extortion and harassment.

Africa News24 (AN24) report that this was further alarmed after an alleged report of N40,000 extortion from a citizen by an officer of the traffic agency on the 19th of June,2019. Although it was also reported that the citizen was found guilty of going against the law.

Deputy Governor of the state, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat stated that the present administration was committed to giving adequate support to LASTMA officials towards reducing travel within the state, but would not condone any government official terrorizing the citizens.

Dr. Obafemi Hamzat said “And that is why we are currently investigating two of our officers that allegedly harassed citizens who admitted driving against traffic. But the essence of LASTMA officers on the road was not to harass but to affirm the dictate of the road traffic law and be civil while enforcing it.

Speaking on the apprehended LASTMA officers allegedly caught in the act of extortion, Dr. Hamzat assured Lagosians they are currently before the State Disciplinary Management Board and the law will take it’s placed if found guilty.

“The claim is that the two officers allegedly extorted money from the driver. A petition has been written to the state government by a law firm stating how it happened. The officers have been referred to the agency that has the power to discipline them for investigation,”

He further cautioning residents against depositing money for fines into officers’ personal accounts, as the only approved account must have Lagos State Government as the account holder.
