Feelings have been mixed on the social media over the announcement by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Wednesday, that he was dropping “Your Excellency” title.
Sanwo-Olu had in a statement said that title was one of the things “which impede the genuine expression of the democratic spirit of our society and the meaningful exercise of the sovereignty of our people.”
He had gone to say he wished to be addressed as “Mr. Governor.”
On the social media, while some have commended the Lagos State number one citizen over his humility, others think it is not necessary.
A social media user, Alabi Adebukola in his cynical reaction asked rhetorically: “Will that remove the numerous potholes on Lagos roads?”
But Olatunde Omoniyi did not see anything wrong in what the governor did. “It’s his personal decision, which I feel is not bad,” he said.
Another social media user, Abiodun Jemilohun was rather ambivalent. He stated: “Though I agree that the way we address public office holders in Nigeria fosters a monarchical mindset, I do not think this is the most important thing on his table at the moment.”
Sesan Lanre Babs however thought Sanwo-Olu showed great leadership by dropping the exalted title. He said: “This is what I call leadership by example. Kudos to you Mr. Sanwo-Olu.
Yet another social media user, Tunji Oyeromi thought it was one of the ” little things that count indeed. “
