Five suspects have been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on Thursday after it discovered and destroyed over 40 hectares of hemp plantation in Abatade, Oluyole Local Government Area (LGA), Oyo State.
The agency disclosed that it got an intelligence report on farmers in the community who have been engaging in hemp plantation which is against the law of the country.
The Oyo State Commander, Mr Ralph Igwenagu while addressing the press said that it was not the first time the agency will be destroying hemp plantations in the area.
According to him, the command had previously destroyed six hectares of plantation in Ibarapa LGA of the state.
He added that investigations are still going on as the command will not stop until they fish out and arrest the perpetrators.
He said, “The owners of the plantation are not from the village but they got the land from the village head.
“If the villagers refused to give them the land, the people will not get land to cultivate again and eventually they will leave the illegal business,” he said.
He, however, urged community leaders to be wary of who they give their lands to for farming and if they suspect any for cultivation of illicit substances.
Mr Mutiat Okuwobi, the state Public Relations Officer of the agency, said the command would continue to monitor farmland to prevent cultivation of hemp.
