All is now not set for the 5th Lagos City Marathon which will take place February 8th, 2020 in Lagos.
According to the organisers of the road race, 30 Gold Label runners and 25 Silver Label runners are to participate in the sporting event in addition to hundreds of Lagosians and foreigners who are expected at the marathon.
The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon remains the biggest one day event in Africa with the aim of promoting sports, health and wellness.
Since its inaugural edition in 2016, the marathon has provided employment for thousands of Lagosians across industries. It has helped to boost tourism, empower the youths, improve the state’s economy especially the hospitality industries, transportation and others. The 2020 edition is expected to continue the tradition.
For the 2020 edition, runners will pay N5000 to participate in the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon. This is to ensure that the marathon conforms to other elite and labelled marathons around the world.
Though just entering its fifth edition, the marathon is today one of the most sought after sports events on the IAAF/AIMS marathons and road races calendar by top marathoners, coaches, athlete managers, sponsors, athletics.
The race is a qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games marathon. A delegation from the world governing body of the Untra Run, to be led by its President is expected to be in the Lagos marathon.
Hundreds of foreigners have signified from Europe, Asia and the Americas have signified interest in the road race.
Since its inaugural edition in 2016, the Marathon has been extending its frontiers to set new records.
In a statement released by the organisers of the marathon, the race got the prestigious IAAF Silver Label last month. It is the first marathon in the world to achieve a Silver Label within four years.
Before February 8, 2020, the date of the fifth edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will be the first marathon in the world to have a marathon village.
The finish Point at Eko Atlantic City has been adjudged by IAAF/ AIMS officials as one of the best in the world.
About 20 Athletics Federation President from different parts of the world have signified interest in attending the 2020 edition. To encourage Nigerians to embrace the culture of running the marathon has robust prize money for Nigerian winners and two cars for the first female runners in the 10km race. Wheelchairs will also be provided for the physically challenged.
Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos state on sports, Mr. Toye Adeboye who spoke at the media briefing held at the state’s Press Centre said that Lagos state Government under the administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwoolu will always support sports events such as this because of its many benefits.
