Four persons have been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday, having been charged with assaulting and unlawfully detaining a policeman.
The suspects identified as Kujembola Olawashina, 36, Kola Afolabi, 42, Alade Adeyinka, 26 and Toyin Obide, 49, were arraigned on a four-count charge of conspiracy, breach of peace, assault and obstructing a police officer from perfoming his duty.
The Prosecutor, Ezekiel Ayorinde an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), said the defendants and others still at large had committed the offences on November 18, at Edge Base Technology, Ikeja.
He further went on to reveal that the defendants conducted themselves in a manner that was likely to cause a breach of peace by beating, obstructing and detaining a police officer attached to Area F Police Command, Ikeja, from performing his duty.
His words: “The complainant went to the defendants’ company to arrest one of their staff who failed to honour police invitation in a case of fraud and stealing.
“The defendants prevented the complainant from arresting the suspect. They beat him up and locked him inside a room.
“When the complainant was finally freed without executing his duty, he came back with his colleagues to arrest the defendants while the others escaped.”
The defendants have since pled ‘not guilty’ to the charges which carry up to three years imprisonment sentence if found guilty.
The presiding magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi granted each of them a N200,000 worth of bail with two sureties who should be gainfully employed, and able to show evidence of a two-year-tax payment to the Lagos State Government
The matter has been adjourned to February 17.
