The House of Representatives Committee on Power and the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission, (NERC), on Tuesday ordered the supension of the planned hike in electricity tariffs.
The committee headed by Magaji Da’u Aliyu l ordered Minister of Power, Engr. Saleh Mamman and NERC to suspend the plan indefinitely, after it reached an agreement that the planned hike was not backed by any law.
It also directed the ministry and NERC to suspend the tariff review until all customers had prepaid metres and the NERC law tweaked to authorise the policy.
NERC had announced in its December 2019 Minor Review of Multi-Year Tariff Order 2015 and Minimum Remittance Order for the Year 2020, that the electricity tariffs being paid by consumers will increase in April this year.
