A mechanic identified as Chima Ikwunado has been allegedly tortured and killed by policemen in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Chima, in the company of four boys, was arrested in mid-December by policemen for driving against traffic jn Port Harcourt.
The boys, who according to Chima’s brother, were working with him, were Victor Ogbonna, Osaze Friday, Ifeanyi Osuji, and Ifeanyi Onyekwere.
Obinna, Chima’s brother, said the police were offered bribe to look the other way, which they collected, but after discovering a larger amount on the offenders, they arrested them.
Obinna said that various sums were obtained from Chima and the boys totalling over N150,000, and their phones and valuable items were collected on their way to the station.
He noted that on getting to the station at Mile 1, Port Harcourt, the suspects were branded robbers who had stolen the vehicles they were giving a test-drive.
Obinna also claimed that his brother and other suspects were beaten, hung on a ceiling fan, tortured and forced to write statements implicating them of robbery.
Obinna said, “When the owner of the vehicle that my brother was testing came to testify that his car was not stolen, the police still delayed in releasing the victims from the prison.
“They did not care about them, nor treat their wounds. We discovered that my brother was dead when we pressed to see him. The Police denied us that. But Inspector Sam informed our lawyer that my brother was killed by his men.”
The police has yet to comment on the issue as of press time.
