Sanusi’s Dethronment: What Prominent Nigerians Are Saying
Tobi Adebayo
The dethronement of Muhammad Sanusi II by the Kano State Goverment as the Emir of Kano came as a shock to Nigerians on Monday.
Different reactions have trailed the development as Nigerians, likewise the prominent ones have thrown their support behind the deposed Emir and condemned the state government, describing the action as a witch hunt.
Speaking on the situation, former President Olusegun Obasanjo in a letter to Sanusi said the former Emir had “paid the price.”
“It is sad because it was undeserved. It is good because you have paid the price. My prayer is that God should give you the fortitude and courage to continue on the path that you have chosen for yourself in the best interest of our country and humanity.”
Former President’s aide, Reno Omokri said that Sanusi was reaping what he sowed against former President Goodluck Jonathan.
In an Instagram post, Omokri said: “Last year I said everyone who falsely accused former President Jonathan would pay for it. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi is a manipulative individual who deliberately lied against ex-President Jonathan to forestall him and facilitate the election of General Muhammadu Buhari.
“Well, he has his Buhari. Is he happy? He should find time to read Galatians 6:7-8. One by one, the God that Jonathan kneels to pray to will vindicate him.”
Publisher of Ovation Magazine, Bashorun Dele Momodu said the dethronement of Sanusi was born out of jealousy.
Momodu posted a picture of Sanusi and captioned it: “IJA ILARA KO TAN BORO, A NJUWON KO SE E WI LEJO… Nothing beclouds reasoning than envy! The last time SANUSI was booted out as Central Bank Governor, he soon became the Emir! Who knows where God is taking him next… God’s ways are mysterious… Allah Akbar!”
Former Senator, Shehu Sani said the dethronement revealed the intolerance and toxicity of power in the North.
Sani tweeted via his verified Twitter handle: “The removal of Emir Sanusi represents the incompatibility of the crown and conscience, the consequences of dissent against established norms and the heavy price of holding principles in our north. It also revealed the intolerance and toxicity of the liquor of power.”
The Arewa Consultative Forum said it earlier intervened in the feud between the Kano State Government and Kano Emirate Council in its efforts to ensure an amicable resolution of the issues between them.
“ACF has no alternative than to call on the people of Kano Emirate to remain calm and show understanding of the situation”, the group said.
Nigerian singer, Eedris AbdulKareem mocked Muhammad Sanusi II and said he deserved the dethronment for championing “the Jonathan is corrupt cause.”
AbdulKareem wrote on his Instagram page: ”Dear Sanusi Lamido, a corrupt man caught stuffing dollars into his babariga removed you from office! It’s an unfortunate situation but this is the price you have to pay for championing the Jonathan is Corrupt cause with no evidence but propaganda. Today, you are witnessing the real corruption! Good luck!”
