Some of the inmates at the custodial centres of the Nigeria Correctional Service, NCoS, have been granted pardon by President Muhamadu Buhari.
The inmates were granted pardon to decongest some of the overburdened custodial centres due to the ravaging coronavirus pandemic.
It was gathered that the inmates would be released on Thursday, although the category of inmates to be released has not been ascertained
The Interior Minister, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola said last week that he had met with the Minister of Justice and other relevant officials to agree on a proposal to be presented to the President on decongesting the facilities at this period.
There were rumours that President Buhari had granted amnesty few days after meeting with the Ministers.
According to officials, the rumours led to a riot at the Kaduna Custodial Centre, leaving four inmates dead.
