The Nigerian Correctional Services has been ordered to immediately release a former Governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.
The directive was issued by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Tuesday.
Justice Mohammad Liman granted the lawmaker’s application for release moved by his counsel Lateef Fagbemi.
The judge granted the release because he received no opposition to Kalu’s application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Kalu who is the Kuje Correctional Service centre, was convicted in December 2019 for looting N7.65billion belonging to Abia State.
Nigeria’s Supreme Court on May 28, 2020 nullified the judgment against Orji Uzor-Kalu, which led him to 12 years imprisonment.
The apex court stated that the Federal High Court in Lagos acted without jurisdiction when it convicted Kalu, his firm, Slok Nigeria Limited, and former Director of Finance in Abia State, Jones Udeogu.
