Lagos Frees 18 Awaiting-Trial Inmates

18 awaiting-trial inmates of the Kirikiri Medium Security Custodial Centre have been pardoned by the Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba.
Justice Alogba freed the inmates at an open session on the premises of the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Igbosere, Lagos Island.
He noted that the pardoned inmates were of good conduct and due procedure was followed in selecting them.
The Chief Judge stated that the exercise was in line with the efforts by the Federal Government to decongest the prisons as part of strategies to curtail spread of the coronavirus disease.

He urged the pardoned inmates against returning to crime and warned that harsher punishment awaits them if they were ever caught committing a crime.
“Don’t think that if you go back and breach the law, we won’t know; we will know because in Lagos State we now have a database and fingerprints. If you are caught in crime and brought back, your punishment will be severe,” Justice Alogba said.
