Police Nab Couple For Maltreating Grandchild Over Witchcraft Allegations

A 57-year-old man identified as Joseph Akporugo and his wife, Janet have been arrested by men of Ogun State Police Command for maltreating their seven-year-old granddaughter over witchcraft allegations.

The minor (name withheld) had gone to report her grandparents to a police constable who lives close to their Awa-Ijebu residence in the state.

The girl reported the maltreatment melted on her by her grandfather and his wife whom she had been staying with since the death of her biological father.

She explained that the couple burnt her with hot rubber band on allegations that she was a witch and that she killed her biological father.

A statement by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi on Wednesday said the constable brought her to Awa-Ijebu police station where the case was reported.

The DPO, Adewalehinmi subsequently detailed detectives to the couple’s house and they were promptly arrested.

On interrogation, the couple were unable to justify their actions on the little girl.

The State’s Commissioner of police, Kenneth Ebrimson had ordered a proper investigation of the case with the view to prosecuting the suspects.
