Mary Brown, a gospel artiste based in Port-Harcourt, who recently dropped a single “He is here” chats with AN24.net Editor, Paul Dada about her song and her music career.

Let’s have a peep into your background

I was born in Rivers state by Edo parents. I grew up under strict tutoring by my dad who was a teacher here in Rivers. I attended all my schools here in Rivers too.

How did you come into the music ministry?

I’ve been a singer all my life. From the children choir to adult choir in various churches. God spoke to me and said it was time to reach out to others now, not only those within my denomination. I just had to start this year.

Was there a particular reason you decided to record ” He is here” as your debut single?

Sure, there was. This was particularly the first song God gave me. We were in a prayer meeting, very early in the morning in church. While praying for divine healing and health because of the health challenges I was experiencing, the song came . God said He was there to heal and raise the dead. I started experiencing changes too in my health and family. So I decided that this was going to be the first song I would sing to the world.

What exactly do you want to achieve with gospel music?

Thank you so much for this question. I want to win souls to God through my songs. I want my songs to bring healing through Gods power. I want my songs to bring smiles and comfort to people. These and many more are my prayers as I sing.

Looking at the Nigerian gospel music terrain, it would seem there is much commercialisation. How do you draw a line between singing to win souls and singing to make money?

Ok, I understand the fact that many gospel singers are currently abusing the gift of God and have turned from singing to win souls but the fact still remains that I pray to be focused and in continuous connection with God and keep myself on guard so I don’t lose focus. God will definitely help me.

What is the level of acceptance for “He is here?” What feedbacks are you getting from people?

The feedbacks are very encouraging. I’m sincerely amazed especially because it’s my very first. I hear people singing it. I hear people promoting it, even without me knowing. I will say God actually is doing what He promised to do through the song “He is here.”

When should we expect another single from you?

Others are out already; “Forever, You’ll be mine,” and “Jesus knows your name.”

Where do you hope to be in the next five years?

I pray to be where God promised to take me to; the top. On every screen and air. So help me God. Amen
