The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill to establish a Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State, for second reading.

The Bill titled: “A Bill for an Act to provide for the establishment of Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State and for matters connected therewith, 2021” was sponsored by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central).

According to Bamidele, the Ekiti State Government has already offered to release about 1,000 hectares of land for the take-off of the institution.

Also the the Deputy Leader of the Senate, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, and Senator Ibrahim Gobir noted that the establishment of the institution will help in supporting research.

They emphasied the fact that due to lack of adequate manpower, the outbreak of the pandemic had exposed the poor state of medical facilities in the country, and stated that the said establishment of the teaching university would hasten medical research into vaccine production in the country.

The Senate through a voice vote agreed that the bill be scaled for second reading and the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, referred it to the Committee on Health, to report back in four weeks.
