Supreme Court Affirms INEC’s Deregistration Of Political Parties

The Supreme Court has sacked a member of the House of Representatives, Mustapha Usman, representing Yola South/Yola North/Girei Federal Constituency of Adamawa State, northern Nigeria.

The Supreme Court on Friday has affirmed an earlier judgement of the Court of Appeal, which okayed the deregistration of National Unity Party (NUP) and others.

Independent National Electoral Commission deregistered the parties in 2020

The deregistration was as a result of the parties’ failure to win any election during the 2019 general election.

In the judgement, delivered by Justice China Nweze, the apex court said the deregistration of NUP, one of the 74 parties, was done in line with the laws and in compliance with the extant provisions of the Constitution and Electoral Act.
