Governors from the 19 Northern States have said that the call by their Southern counterparts for a power shift to the South is unconstitutional.
The southern governors had in July 2021, said that the next president should come from the south.
However, Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Simon Lalong, after an emergency meeting with northern traditional rulers at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim House, Kaduna, on Monday, said that the statement by the Southern Governors Forum that the Presidency must go to the South is unacceptable.
Reading the resolution after their meeting, Lalong said while some Northern governors favoured power shift to the south to foster national unity, the forum found the statement of the Southern Governor’s contradictory to the provision of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.
Lalong said that the Constitution stated that president must score the major rity votes, score at least 25% of the votes cast in two-thirds of the states of the Federation.
