The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has devolved all its powers to the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) for the next 90 days.
This is to allow the NWC to make decisions on the 2023 elections.
The decision was taken during the APC’s extraordinary NEC meeting presided over by the party’s National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.
The meeting was attended by President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, governors elected on the platform of the APC and other party members.
The motion for the decision taken by the National Executive Committee to devolve powers to the National Working Committee was moved by Lawan and seconded by Gbajabiamila.
AN24 gathered from reliable sources that the NEC during its meeting held behind closed-door at the Congress Hall of the Transcop Hilton Hotels, Abuja, agreed that the National Working Committee will have powers to make decisions on the issues of guidelines for the House of Assembly, National Assembly, gubernatorial and presidential primaries coming up in May.
The National Executive Committee during the meeting which lasted for about three hours also resolved that the party’s NWC will legislate over matters arising from the governorship and presidential appeals.
In his remarks during the meeting, President Buhari, who noted that oppressors’ behaviours have driven strong APC members from the party, urged the National Working Committee to keep the party together and work for APC’s success in 2023 general elections.
He also implored all party members to recognise the place of due process and respect extant rules in the interest of the party.
The President, who assured the NWC of his full support advised them to seek assistance whenever the need arises. He also encouraged them to work collectively ahead of the general elections.
Speaking during the meeting, APC National Chairman, Senator Adamu called for a discontinuation of the present rancour within the party and encouraged members to uphold exemplary behaviours.
He said the NWC has started the process of uniting aggrieved members as well as discussing upcoming elections.
The Wednesday meeting is the 11th meeting of the NEC and the first the Adamu-led National Working Committee will be having since the party’s National Convention held on Saturday, March 26.
