Eid-el-Fitr: Kogi Workers Decries Non-Payment Of Salaries
…Kogi Civil Servants Warn Nigerians Against Voting For Yahaya Bello
It was a tale of agony and hunger for Kogi State workers even as other parts of the nation and the world celebrate Eid-el-Fitr.
For torrents of Muslims in the North-Central state, AN24 gathered that the celebration was either postponed till further notice (the completion of the state governor, Yahaya Bello’s tenure) or carried out on loan.
Workers in the state have lamented over the non-payment of salaries by the Yahaya Bello-led government.
A lot of the grieving staff warned Nigerians against voting for Governor Bello, stating that he mismanaged the finances of the state thereby not fit to lead the country.
They stressed that they had never been in such a difficult situation since the creation of the state in 1991 and added that they are praying fervently to survive the governor’s “calamitous reign.”
Governor Bello is a foremost contender for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket for the 2023 presidency and was the first aspirant to pay the N100 million fee for the party’s nomination and expression of interest forms.
Some Nigerians on social media have also blasted the governor over his failure to pay civil servants’ salaries.
Reacting to a post he made on Eid-el-Fitr on his official Twitter Account, @MC_Highness said, “Mtcheeeew. You are celebrating Sallah whilst Kogi State civil servants are weeping for no payment of salary.”
A Facebook user, Oshe Oluwaseunayofunmi Sanlot said, “Fasting continues in Kogi state as civil servants are not expecting salary anytime soon.”
The governor’s tenure has been marred with non-payment of salaries and percentage payments and some workers in the state have, over the years, allegedly died because of lack of payment.

Some of the state civil servants who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the state was a ghost town due to a lack of money to mark the Muslim celebration. Even though Governor Bello is a Muslim and knows the importance of the celebration, he has not been able to compel the governor to pay workers, they complained.
A staff of the state’s Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, who spoke to AN24 said the governor’s tenure has been traumatic for everybody, stating that it was not only state workers that are affected by his “draconian rule.”
“Even business owners are suffering at the moment because the largest percentage of workers in the state are state workers. If we do not get paid, we cannot buy things from them and when we do, we buy on credit.
“I am a devout Christian but the impact of the salary deficiency this period hit us all. My Muslim neighbours that I have shared the same compound with for more than 10 years did not offer me anything for the first time since they packed in. It is not their fault, it is the situation of things in the state.”
Another state worker who preferred to be addressed as Ibrahim said electing Bello as president would be the greatest mistake Nigerians will ever make.
“He will destroy this country. He is a destroyer. He is from my local government area but I must tell you the truth, he has no business with leadership and governance. He is only out for a show-off. The man is just too wicked, he fasted with us and decided that we won’t celebrate Eid-el-Fitr in joy, that is the attitude of an average Nigerian politician.”
He, however, expressed fears that the governor may be declared the president after the 2023 elections, citing the election that brought Bello into power as an example of his alleged diabolical acts.
Governor Bello assumed office as Kogi governor in…. 2016 after the death of the leading governorship candidate, Abubakar Audu, before its governorship election was concluded, throwing the state into what appeared a constitutional logjam.
