Emeka Nwajiuba Becomes Buhari’s First Minister To Resign Over Presidential Ambition

Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajuiba is the first minister to resign from President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet over presidential ambition.

The resignation is due to the controversy around section 84(12) of the amended Electoral Act, which reads, “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention or congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.”

Buhari confirmed his resignation at the Federal Executive Council meeting which held today and instructed other ministers and federal appointees aiming to contest for presidency in 2023 to follow Nwajiuba’s footstep.

He said, “I expect other members of this council seeking to be President to resign with immediate effect.”

Nwajiuba was appointed as a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in August 2019.

His presidential ambition generated negative reactions on social media because of the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

He had served as House of Representatives committee chairman on Land, Housing and works from 1999 to 2003 before contesting Imo governorship on the platform of APP in 2003, 2007 and as CPC candidate in 2011.

Nwajiuba won election into the House of Representatives to represent Okigwe North Constituency under the ticket of the Accord Party in the 2019 poll.

He defected to the ruling APC shortly after his nomination for the minister and subsequent screening by the Senate.
