BREAKING: Buhari Begs ASUU To Call Off Strike

Published

President Muhammadu Buhari has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to consider the plight of the students and called off the lingering strike.

He urged ASUU and the striking lecturers to end the industrial action, which has paralysed academic activities in Nigerian universities for over three months.

President Buhari made the appeal to ASUU at the 19th National Productivity Day Celebration and Conferment of National Productivity Order of Merit Award, held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
The President also appealed to the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), to exercise patience as the government tries to resolve the crisis.

It would be recalled that ASUU has been on strike since February 2022.
The Union is demanding funding for the revitalisation of public universities, the Earned Academic Allowances, the University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) and promotion arrears. Its demand also includes the renegotiation and implementation of the 2009 ASUU-FG Agreement and the inconsistency in the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System.

In the last few months, there have been several meetings between Federal Government representatives led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige and ASUU leadership but both have not been able to agree to address the concerns of the striking aggrieved workers’ unions.
