Justice Mary Peter-Odili Bows Out Of Supreme Court

Erudite jurist, Justice Mary Peter-Odili of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on Thursday, bowed out of the apex court following her retirement from public service, having attained 70 years on May 12.

Justice Mary is the wife of the former Governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, the first governor of the state between 1999 and 2007.

Justice Peter-Odili (nee Nzenwa), who was born on May 12, 1952, at Amudi Obizi, Ezinihitte – Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, is the third woman to be elevated to the Supreme Court of Nigeria after Aloma Mariam Mukhtar and Olufunlola Adekeye.

Justice Peter-Odili, who obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Law in 196 and Nigerian Law School in 1977, served as Pupil State Counsel in the Ministry of Justice of Ogun State and old Bendel State between 1977 and 1978. She also served as Magistrate in Bendel and Rivers State from 1978 to 1992 and later served as a Judge in the High Court of Rivers State from 1992 to 2004.

She was elevated to the Court of Appeal in 2004 and served meritoriously as Justice, Court of Appeal, Abuja Judicial Division (2004 to 2010) and Presiding Justice, Court of Appeal, Kaduna Division (2010 to 2011)

Justice Mary Peter-Odili was appointed a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on June 23, 2011, and served as Deputy Chairman, National Judicial Council (March 2021 to May 12, 2022).
