A former governor of Kano State and member of the Senate, representing Kano Central Senatorial District, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau has dumped the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to pitch his tent with the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).

Shekarau’s defection to NNPP was announced on Wednesday by the former Director-General of the Bola Tinubu Support Groups Management Council, Hon. AbdulMumin Jibrin.

Jibrin, who recently joined the NNPP, on Wednesday morning, tweeted “Game over! Welcome to NNPP, Sen Ibrahim Shekarau.”

A few minutes after Jibrin’s tweet, NNPP also tweet photographs of the visit of the party’s leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, to Shekarau’s home.

Kwankwaso, the presidential hopeful of NNPP is a former governor of Kano State and represented Kano Central Senatorial District in the Eighth Assembly.

Shekarau’s defection from APC to NNPP was as a result of the crisis within the ruling party in Kano State and in the last few days, there have been defections of many APC chieftains and public office holders to NNPP ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Senator Shekarau has not publicly made his defection known, though he has been meeting with Kwankwaso and other NNPP leaders in recent times.

Prior to his reported defection, there have been several moves by Kano State governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje to stop Shekarau’s exit from the ruling party. Governor Ganduje paid an unusual visit to Shekarau’s residence last week supposedly to appeal to him not to dump the APC. But the move seemed not to have yielded the desired results.

With his move to NNPP, Shekarau will now join forces with his one-time rival, predecessor and successor, Kwankwaso, in a bid to wrestle power from incumbent Governor Ganduje, who is gradually losing APC chieftains to opposition parties.
