Video of the incident showed an ice mass collapsing down the slopes of Marmolada, the area’s highest mountain.
It isn’t clear what caused the section of the glacier to collapse, but a rescue service spokesperson said the area has been experiencing unusually high temperatures in recent days and it is almost certain that climate change will have played a role as the climate of the Alps is changing rapidly.
