Sleeping Politicians

Last week the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was caught on camera sleeping at a public event. Tinubu, the National Leader of APC and former Lagos State Governor, dozed into a nap on Saturday during a meeting with the Emir of Gombe, Abubakar Shehu-Abubakar. 

Tinubu was in Gombe primarily to attend the wedding of Misbahu Inuwa Yahaya, son of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya. But during his stay in Gombe, he decided to pay a brief homage at the Emir’s Palace and also have a political meeting.

As the meeting got underway, Tinubu was captured sleeping while the Senate President, Dr. Ahmad Lawan was addressing attendees in the Emir of Gombe’s living room.

The picture of Tinubu dozing off during the meeting generated a lot of issues and concerns within the polity, especially among pro and anti-supporters of the APC presidential candidate.

Sleeping is a natural phenomenon and this can be caused often times when someone doesn’t get enough sleep over an elongated period of time. For several Nigerian politicians, who have been caught on camera sleeping, people believe that the reason for them dozing off or sleeping during public events is as a result of stress from their extreme workloads and working sleepless nights to deliver dividends of democracy to the citizens of the country.

Here are some notable politicians who have been caught sleeping in public.

1. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

Tinubu is one of the busiest politicians in Nigeria and in the last few months, he has been busy with his presidential aspiration. He was caught dozing off last Saturday, September 17, 2022, during a meeting with the Emir of Gombe, Abubakar Shehu-Abubakar.

2. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, a retired Army General, former Head of State and Nigeria’s first President in the present Fourth Republic, was caught taking a nap during a meeting.

3. Governor Nyesom Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike is one of the performing governors in Nigeria. He is known as ‘Mr. Project.’ Governor Wike, who is without any iota of doubt the most vocal Peoples Democratic Party, PDP governor, has also been caught dozing off in the gaze of the public many times.

4. Governor Abdullahi Ganduje

Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdulahi Ganduje is another politician caught sleeping in public. The two-term governor, who had previously served as the deputy governor of Kano State between 1999 and 2003 as well as from 2011 to 2015, was caught on camera having a nap at the African-Indian Summit held in India. He was among the dignitaries that went with President Buhari to India for a four-day official visit.

5. Governor Ifeanyi Okowa

Delta State Governor and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, was caught some years ago sleeping during a Senate hearing. The medical doctor turned politician represented Delta North Senatorial District in the Seventh Senate between 2011 and 2015.

6. Mr. Babatunde Fashola

Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), the Minister of Works and Housing, is one of the celebrated public office holders, especially during his days as the Governor of Lagos State. The lawyer turned politician was at the helms of affairs in the Centre of Excellence between 2007 and 2015. The workaholic Fashola was caught sleeping during a bus tour while inspecting some building projects.

7. Chief Willie Obiano

The immediate past governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has also been caught on camera taking a nap in public. He was caught sleeping during a meeting.

8. Senator Rochas Okorocha

Owelle Rochas Okorocha, a former Governor of Imo and current member of the Senate, representing Imo West Senatorial District, has also been caught trying to catch a nap in public.

He was caught sleeping during a Senate plenary session and was also caught taking a nap while on a visit with President Muhammadu Buhari as a member of Nigeria’s foreign delegation.

9. Senator Godswill Akpabio

Senator Godswill Akpabio, former Governor of Akwa-Ibom State and the immediate past Minister of Niger Delta, is also among the list of politicians who have slept off while in public. He was also caught sleeping during a Senate plenary session. Akpabio, who represented Akwa-Ibom North West, was the Senate Minority Leader during the Eighth Senate.

10. Senator Barnabas Gemade

Senator Barnabas Gemade, a former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, was also caught on camera sleeping in public. Senator Gemade, who represented Benue North East, was also caught sleeping during a Senate plenary session.

11. Hon. Essien Ayi

Hon. Essien Ayi, a member of the House of Representing Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency, was also caught sleeping on camera dozing away. He was caught sleeping during the 2016 budget presentation.
