BREAKING: Reopen Varsities Immediately, FG Orders VCs

Following recent abduction of one of its member, Prof Yinka Adegbehingbe by Fulani herdsmen, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University branch, on Thursday called on the Inspector General of Police and Osun State Police Commissioner to address the rising incidence of kidnapping in the country or risk industrial action by lecturers.

Vice-Chancellors have been directed by the Federal Government to resume lectures immediately.

This was contained in a letter addressed to all vice-chancellors; Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities through the National Universities Commission.

The letter was signed by the commission’s Director of Finance and Accounts, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.

“Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses”, the letter partly reads.

Recall that the national industrial court of Nigeria on Wednesday ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off its ongoing nationwide strike.

ASUU had been on strike since February 14 to press home the demand for improved funding for universities, a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.

Several meetings between ASUU and the Federal Government have ended in a deadlock.

Consequently, the Federal Government went to court to challenge the strike.
