Sanwo-Olu Brings Succor To Lagosians With Palliatives In Transport Sector

The provision of transport palliatives by the Lagos State Government led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has continued to impact the lives of Lagosians positively. The proactiveness of the governor, who introduced the palliatives to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government, has yielded pats on the back for the Lagos boss.

Earlier this year, Governor Sanwo-Olu, delivering on his promise to safeguard the interest, peace and sanity of residents of Lagos, distributed palliatives to the vulnerable in the state during the cash crunch tsunami that swept around the nooks and crannies of Nigeria.

The removal of subsidy by the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government orchestrated acute hardship on Nigerians, who lamented that it caused rising costs in transportation, essential commodities, utility bills, among other things.

However, Governor Sanwo-Olu on July 31, rolled out multiple palliatives to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal.  The Governor announced a 50 percent reduction on all the state public transport systems, such as the BRT, Last Mile, and Lagos Ferry Services. Considering other residents who don’t use government-owned transport services, the governor partnered yellow buses popularly called Danfo, to effect a 25 percent slash and in addition, Sanwo-Olu directed the provision of more buses for Lagos Civil Servants.

AN24 went into different locations in the state to verify Governor Sanwo-Olu’s claim and see how the palliatives have impacted the vulnerable in Lagos.

Praises, commendations and accolades were poured on Governor Sanwo-Olu and his team for their thoughtfulness to introduce the transport palliatives. The Governor won himself all-time applause for the initiative that has indeed reduced the burden that followed the fuel subsidy removal. To say Lagosians are not proud of Sanwo-Olu’s work so far is to draw legs on a centipede.

Speaking to AN24, the Managing Director of Lagos State Ferry Services Corporation (LAGFERRY,) Abdoulbaq Balogun, appreciated the governor, stating that the decision of Sanwo-Olu has increased the patronage of the service.

He stated that the Sanwo-led government has over the years provided palliatives for Lagosians in times of crisis.

Balogun said, “The palliatives have increased the numbers of passengers, causing demands for more boats. After the removal of the subsidy, we recorded a decline in patronage because the people could not afford the service. But immediately after the Governor announced the subsidy, the usage of boat transportation in Lagos skyrocketed. In fact, our passengers are begging the Governor to get more boats because they now prefer that mode of transportation.”

Also, a supervisor of BRT, Ismail Olusegun said the government has done the best thing for the commuters, who have also been expecting the gesture.

He said, “The turnout is high this time around to the extent that we were shocked to see the number of people that patronise our services at the moment.

“Olusegun said the price from Oshodi to Abule-Egba before the rollout of the palliatives was N450 but it has now been reduced to N270. The people are so happy”

Some passengers who also spoke to AN24 couldn’t curtail their joy over the relief the governor offered them through palliative.

Some of the beneficiaries of the BRT bus at Abule-Egba, while thanking the governor, said the initiative is good and favorable.

“The fare was reduced from N600 to N350 following Sanwo-Olu’s announcement of a palliative,” the commuters said.

One of the beneficiaries said the commuters are enjoying the palliatives.
