Tinubu Mourns The Passing Of Supreme Court Justice Ogwuegbu
President Bola Tinubu has expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of Justice Emmanuel Obioma Ogwuegbu, a former Supreme Court justice, following his passing.
The President also extended his sympathies to the Nigerian judiciary, including members of the bar and bench, who are mourning the loss of the distinguished jurist.
In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised Justice Ogwuegbu’s remarkable contributions to Nigeria’s legal system. Throughout his distinguished career, Ogwuegbu mentored numerous judges and lawyers, leaving an enduring impact on the judiciary.
Born in 1933 in Amainyi, Ihitte-Uboma Local Government Area of Imo State, Justice Ogwuegbu dedicated over five decades to the legal profession, culminating in his appointment as a Justice of Nigeria’s Supreme Court. He also served as President of the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and chaired the Judicial Commission of Inquiry after Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, which investigated human rights violations during the military regime.

President Tinubu celebrated Justice Ogwuegbu’s legacy, noting his unwavering commitment to justice, integrity, and the rule of law. He recognized Ogwuegbu’s pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s judiciary into an institution where justice prevails impartially. The President commended the late justice for his advocacy of discipline, excellence, and integrity, qualities that have left a lasting mark on the nation’s legal landscape.
Reflecting on Justice Ogwuegbu’s landmark rulings, particularly in areas such as federalism, university autonomy, individual rights, and banking regulations, President Tinubu emphasized that these decisions will continue to guide Nigerian law for generations to come.
The President concluded his tribute with prayers for comfort for the late justice’s family and for eternal peace for his soul.
